Just about everyone has heard of Simmons mattresses. Zalmon Simmons founded the Company around since 1870. However, they did not make mattresses at that time. Their first products were cheese boxes and wooden insulators. Six years later, he decided to produce woven wire mattresses only. In 1889, he started using spiral coil springs for the mattresses. This change drastically reduced the cost of a mattress. 

In 1912, the Company introduced a product called the Wall-A-Bed bedding product, which was the predecessor to their well-known product known as the Murphy bed. It was not until 1916 that the Company started their first national advertising campaign by using a double page ad in the Saturday Evening Post. In 1918, the Company marketed their first cotton-felt mattress. Then the following year they purchased nine manufacturing plants around the United States and Canada.  

The Company used well-known personalities to market the Simmons mattresses including Eleanor Roosevelt in the late 1920s and early 1930s. During the depression of the 1930s the Company marketed a studio couch, which was a couch that pulled out into a bed. Many people could not afford a regular bed due to the depression. They were one of the first Companies to do a sleep research study. Their research has formed the base point for modern day sleep research. 

In 1958, the Company introduced the first king and queen size mattress. The Company has continued to innovate and improve the Simmons mattresses over the years. They are one of the recognized leaders in the bedding industry. In 2001, they introduced the first new mattress size in forty-two years. It is the Olympic Queen; it is ten percent larger than a traditional queen size mattress. 

Probably the most popular of the Simmons mattresses is the Beautyrest mattress. The main feature of this particular product is that it is designed to suppress motion of the people sleeping. All of their mattress styles feature a system called the pocketed coil, which suppresses approximately fifty-six percent of all motion according to the Company. The idea is that the less motion you feel while sleeping, the better the rest you will get. These ideas were first compiled through the Companies extensive sleep research studies.
