Have You Heard of a Murphy Bed?
If you are
short on space then a Murphy bed is right for you.
Many people are forced to live in crowded conditions in big cities
around the world. Due to this situation, making use of space is
extremely important.
As far back as just before the 1900’s, a
man named William Murphy wanted a way to hide his bed so he could
invite his girlfriend to his one room apartment. Young women did
not enter a single man’s bedroom. Thus, he had to find a way to
hide the bed.
The idea he came up with involved
flipping the bed on its end and into a closet while still fully
made. This way it could be stored completely out of sight. It could
also be brought back out when it was required.
He then patented his idea in 1900. He
started to manufacture the beds in San Francisco and soon they
became quite popular. After the 1906 earthquake, they became even
more popular because of the massive amount of damage in the city
and thus peoples living spaces needed to be utilized in the best
manner possible.
The Murphy bed was quickly becoming
popular across the country as well. Apartment life was also
becoming more popular as cities were growing across the
country.
The Murphy bed business was moved to New
York in the twenties and at the time of this writing, it is still
there today. They can be found in apartments, fire stations,
offices, hospitals and hotels around the world.
In fact, the Murphy bed is utilized
anywhere in the world where space is limited.
