Air mattress beds are very simple in their design. Just fill with air and sleep on them. Many people use them for camping, as long as they have a portable air pump because you do not want to spend a long time pumping your mattress, it will take too much of your time. Likely, due to their simplicity, there is a multitude of different mattresses available. 

Some of the different air mattress beds have different layers of foam, some have several air chambers and some come with pillow tops. The simple design generally costs less than the style that comes with extras. When it comes to a mattress like this, not all the extras are necessary. Many people find these mattresses to be uncomfortable. If it has not been inflated correctly, you will find yourself sleeping on the floor because of a deflating mattress.  

If you happen to purchase air mattress beds that have the multiple chamber setups, they will likely have multiple pumps and valves as well which just means more work to inflate them. Some styles come with foam layers that are meant to give added support but studies have shown that they can depress or flatten out after a couple months usage. 

If you are looking at purchasing air mattress beds then obtaining a quality air pump is tantamount to enjoying your bed properly. Unfortunately, many pumps that come with the mattress are of poor quality. There should be a warranty with the pump as well. You want something that is reliable especially if your mattress is specifically for traveling. You have to depend on the tools to provide you with a comfortable mattress for sleeping on where ever you are. 

Should you purchase a single or multiple chamber air mattress bed? Some airbeds offer two chambers, one on each side of a queen size bed; thus, one chamber for each sleeper. There are even models that come with three chambers now. The chambers are broken down into one for the head and shoulders of each person, one for the midsection and one for the lower legs and feet. The head and feet sections are adjusted together and the middle portion is adjusted separately.  

Air mattress beds that feature multiple chambers are more expensive than a standard mattress. A bed with multiple chambers can have more problems because there are more parts and things that can break and need repair. You are better off with a single chamber style if you are looking for a good safe buy. As for the basic structure of mattress, one with fewer seams and solvent glued areas the less chance for a leak or tear.  

It would be wise to peruse the consumer reports available on the different air mattress beds on the market to get a good perspective on what is available. Do your research on the internet or by visiting a local mattress supplier and gather as much information as possible before making your purchase. Not everyone prefers this style of mattress, so make sure you test one out before buying as well.
